Anand Malligavad, an engineer-turned-water conservationist, was taken aback when he read that Bengaluru, like Cape town, could soon run dry. It was then that he studied further as to what plagued lakes in the tech capital. More studies convinced him that the solution lay in decade-old practices that had made Bengaluru once the lake capital. He decided to tackle Bangalore’s water crisis by rejuvenating its polluted lakes.
Facing challenges from stakeholders and infrastructure hurdles, he strives to ensure clean drinking water for the city’s 12 million residents. Anand’s mission embodies a race against time to combat India’s water scarcity, symbolized by Bangalore’s drying taps and polluted lakes. His determination to transform these bodies of water into sustainable resources underscores his commitment to securing a future with accessible and clean drinking water for all.
Who is Anand Malligavad?
Anand is head of Sansera Foundation’s corporate projects, and has spearheaded the remarkable rejuvenation of Kyalasanahalli lake, among others, showcasing that genuine corporate social responsibility (CSR) transcends monetary contributions. Through Sansera Engineering’s CSR endeavors, emphasizing education and environmental conservation, Anand has ignited transformative change in the community. The revival of Kyalasanahalli lake, situated in Bommasandra, stands as a testament to Anand’s vision and determination. Despite the typical prolonged timeline for such projects, Sansera’s CSR arm achieved the lake’s makeover within a remarkable 45-day period, captivating the admiration of neighboring villagers.
How did he do it?
Inspired by a desire to enhance their surroundings, Anand proposed the restoration of Kyalasanahalli lake. This was once a sprawling body of water which has been reduced to a mere pond due to encroachment and neglect. Through meticulous research and extensive community engagement, Anand garnered local support and valuable insights. This underscors the pivotal role of community involvement in sustainable initiatives. Sansera’s approach to lake restoration blends modern techniques with traditional wisdom. It is further exemplified by the creation of forested isles and the cultivation of diverse flora to attract wildlife. By excavating vast quantities of silt and unclogging stormwater drains, Sansera significantly increased the lake’s capacity, benefiting both agriculture and biodiversity.
The project’s modest budget underscores the efficiency and effectiveness of Sansera’s efforts, contrasting sharply with government-led initiatives often plagued by bureaucracy and inflated costs. Anand’s proactive engagement with local authorities and transparent process demonstrates Sansera’s commitment to ethical practices and community empowerment. Crucially, the success of the Kyalasanahalli lake restoration reflects the synergy between corporate leadership and grassroots participation. Villagers, grateful for Sansera’s intervention, commend the private sector’s initiative in addressing neglected environmental issues, citing the government’s historical inaction.
