During the 1600’s, it was recognised that the pollution of the Thames river had affected the most vital water source. By 19th century, the problem had magnified, making Thames the most contaminated and unhygienic river in the world.

Doulton Water Filters – A legacy of more than 185 years.

Every brand has its own story, and the testimony of Doulton filters further contributes to its credible worthiness. The legacy of Doulton filters is deeply intertwined with London’s legendary Thames River.

By 1858, River Thames had turned into the planet’s deadliest cesspool of untreated human waste and industrial effluents, incessantly dumped into the river by the merciless city. The Thames was heavily contaminated with raw sewage; cholera and typhoid epidemics were rampant. Over the years so much waste and pollution had accumulated into the Thames, making it the most contaminated and unhygienic river in the world.

In 1826, our very own Henry Doulton pioneered water filtration and invented the concept of the contemporary ceramic candle water filter after which he was commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1835 and consequently awarded a knighthood in 1887 for his innovative Services to the British Empire.

A Water Filter for the Royal Household

Henry Doulton, created micro porous ceramic (diatomaceous earth) cartridges capable of removing bacteria with better than 99% efficiency. This stopped people becoming sick from cholera and other water-borne diseases.

Word had spread on how Doulton successfully filtered the contaminated Thames water into potable water. It was only natural that Queen Victoria, commissioned the company to build water filters for the Royal household. The custom filters so pleased her highness for its efficiency that she conferred the Royal Crest to Doulton’s water filters. The best in water filtration systems for home now had Royal recognition too.
