The rapidly expanding Indian city of Hyderabad experiences an extreme water shortage at present. The supplier notified Narsimha Reddy and other residents near Yousufguda that the upcoming price hike will reach Rs 800 in the following month. The situation has become too expensive for us. Rising water prices and diminishing water supplies have exposed huge differences in water access distribution within Hyderabad’s most prosperous residential areas among weak and disadvantaged communities.
The hot summer period has worsened the current situation. The water supply for Hyderabad depends mostly on reservoirs such as Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar together with the water provided by the Krishna and Godavari rivers. These major water sources reached dangerous levels after several years of poor rainfall occurrences. Almost all groundwater sources used to provide backup water sources have been excessively depleted which makes several borewells go dry.
