Jal Jeevan Mission gets Rs 60,000 crores to bring tap water to all by 2024

Potable water for all by Jal Jeevan Mission in India

On 1st Feb 2022, the Finance Minister of Government of India, Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2022-23. Many schemes and proposals have been set forward as part of the prudent financial planning for the coming financial year by the GOI. And pertinent amongst them all is the set amount that has been earmarked for the Jal Jeevan Mission.

The Jal Jeevan Mission launched in August 2019, is a project by the Government of India project aims to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections by 2024 to all households in India. The program will also implement source sustainability measures as mandatory elements, such as recharge and reuse through optimum water management, water conservation and rain water harvesting.

The Jal Jeevan Mission will be based on a community approach to water. It will include extensive information, education and communication as key components of the mission. The mission looks to create a revolution in water management, thereby making water everyone’s priority. Though this project was started keeping rural households in mind, the project was extended to urban households as well, in last year’s budget. The amount earmarked for JJM in this year’s budget is Rs 60,000 crores and aims to cover a total of 3.8 crore households in 2022-23.

The Jal Jeevan Mission also involves development of piped water supply infrastructure as well as treatment plants. Jal Jeevan Mission was launched after the NITI aayog reported that 600 million Indians suffer extreme water stress and that about 2 lac people die every year due to inadequate access to potable and safe water. It also projected that the nation’s water demand shall be twice the available supply by 2030. learn more from the Jal Jeevan Mission website.

Keeping all these factors in mind, it is worth noting that all water supply systems will need to be regulated adequately and also screened regularly. This will ensure that the drinking water coming out of your tap is consistently potable as well as safe to drink, cook & wash. In such a scenario, water filtration systems that can complement your municipal water supply through the tap are the need of the hour. Simple, non-complicated systems, which can be installed and maintained without professional help and do not depend on electricity, are perfect for the requirement.
